The factory rear axle nut on the Ducati Desert X is less than ideal. It requires a 12-point 36mm socket to remove and hauling around a 1lb (0.5kg) socket and a 2lb (1kg) 1/2" drive ratchet just in case of a rear flat didn't appeal to us.

This axle nut is machined from 7075-T6 Aerospace grade material and sports a standard 6-point 36mm hex head so that it can be removed by a common adjustable end wrench (crescent). Unfortunately an adjustable end wrench capable of handling this size is also enormous and heavy.....so we added an extended 32mm 6-point hex head to the end of the nut. This allows you to utilize a standard Motion Pro tire spoon with a 32mm hex wrench to remove the rear axle and tire/wheel assembly.

USE HIGH PRESSURE MOLY GREASE TO LUBRICATE THREADS

Rear Axle Nut

Replaced the OEM rear nut with this piece. Appears to be well made and will not require the super high torque value Ducati’s axle nut requires.

It works! The factory nut is hard to remove on the trail. This one is easy.

Another High Quality Practical Solution from Vanasche

As to be expected Vanasche has engineered a solution to address the real world needs of the adventure rider. The DesertX is an outstanding adventure bike but does present a few challenges for the rider out on an extended journey. The stock axle nut requires a 36mm 12-point socket and requires a breaker bar or similar to get adequate leverage to remove it. The Vanasche axle nut allows use of something like a Motion Pro T6 Tire Lever (32mm) and is much more practical for chain adjustment or wheel removal in the field. This axle nut is typical Vanasche workmanship and was torture tested in Death Valley prior to it being made available for purchase.
